Goat Racing: The Fastest Hooves in the Caribbean

Imagine the scene: a sun-drenched track, the pulse of steelpan music in the air, and an electrified crowd waiting for the gates to fly open. Then—BAM!!!—they’re off! Hooves pound the dirt and barefooted jockeys sprint behind, gripping long ropes, urging their four-legged athletes toward the finish line. This is Tobago’s legendary goat racing, a sport like no other.

But don’t be fooled by the playful nature of the event—this is serious business. These goats are elite athletes, raised on special diets and trained for months—even swimming to build endurance—all for a race where speed and stamina determine glory. Each racer is sleek, muscular, and dressed in brightly colored silks, as dazzling as any thoroughbred on Derby Day. The result? A head-to-head dash where the difference between glory and disqualification is whether the jockey can keep up.

The races are divided into categories based on experience, from rookie runners to seasoned champions, with titles like "Champ of Champs" up for grabs. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, there’s more—spectators can even place informal bets or try their hand at being a jockey themselves.

Crab Racing: Slow and Steady... or not?

If the goat races don’t have you cheering loud enough, the crab races will. Picture giant blue crabs at the starter line, and their "jockeys" (a.k.a. hopeful crab wranglers) armed with thin bamboo sticks to urge them on. The goal? To coax, nudge, and sometimes downright plead with their sideways-moving competitors to reach the finish line first.

Some crabs dart off in unexpected directions, others stubbornly refuse to budge, but when one finally crosses the line, the crowd erupts in laughter and applause. The champion crab? Well, its reward is often a one-way trip to a pot of Tobago’s famous Crab and Dumpling.
